Black Gold Turquoise Swirl Glass Bracelet Charm

The first of my bracelet charms are now up on the website. There’s more to come, don’t worry :-) These great little charms are only £1.99 and like the Murano Charms, can easily be added onto an existing bracelet or necklace to add a splash of colour.

Crafter at work

Looks like the rise in the self representing artisan is is starting to get noticed. I can’t help feeling that a lot of this is going to fall flat unless we can start handing the skills we are learning (which I’m very sure are different from the skills that our ancestors learned, different tools, more marketing slanted, knowledge of applying for funding etc…) on to the next generation.

Have any of you considered taking on an apprentice?

Did you manage to do an apprenticeship in your craft?

Are you part of a circle of crafters that share information, skills and advice?

I can see things starting to come together now, with more craft groups forming and people being able to share information and ideas. The bigest thing I still notice about “craft” is that it’s so very disparate and exists in pockets with very little crossover. I could understand it if these pockets were skill dependant, but they are very much social circle dependant.

Having run the Craft Fairs in Edinburgh Facebook Group for a couple of years now it still amazes me how many completely disparate groups of crafters are out there in Edinburgh alone. I’m still stumbling accross multiple new organisers of craft fairs every year. When I say new, I mean neither the crafters I know or myself have heard of them, not the fact that they have just started. Most of them have been running fairs for years.

I strongly reccomend that anyone who is involved in craft makes an effort to socialise with other crafters, both at fairs and outside it. There’s so much information and support out there that you will never hear about unless you speak to other crafters and start crossing into those other pockets.

Without that crossover of ideas, passion and skills Scottish crafters will continue to reinvent the wheel and fail to reach the hights of what is possible. If you are edinburgh based I recommend you consider some of the existing groups like Craft Reactor or Granny Green’s Big Night Out elsewhere maybe look for things like a local Craft Mafia or just hunt about online.

I’m giving away this lovely pair of Pink Candy Stripe Hand Blown Glass Ball Earrings worth £16.99 to one of my facebook fans this Sunday (17th October).

I’m afraid there’s no other way to see if you have spread the word, so make sure you remember to post the comment on the facebook post. I’ll randomly select one of the commenters on Sunday night to receive these wonderful earrings.

Artfire Logo

I’m back from my little holiday and all refreashed and ready to face the “C” word preparations. One of the things I’ve done is to set up an ArtFire shop front. It’s much more of an online shop at it’s core than either Ebay or Etsy, and that brings several powerful tools like coupons and discounts that can be easily applied to products. All in all it looks like a powerful additional sales tool.

Look out for some special offers as I try out a thing or two :-)

Craft Reactor Logo

I was along at the Craft Reactor meetup last night for a bit of a hang out and a play with some new components I’m toying with at the moment. I had a great time nattering to some very experienced crafters who were full of great ideas.

It’s very odd to be speaking to other crafters in that sort of environment, as normally I only get to speak to crafters between customers at a fair or in quite business focussed chats when we are planning something together. It’s so much nicer to be able to just hang out and share ideas, it was a great way to get some different perspectives and really get your juices flowing.

All in all a great evening and I recommend dropping by if you are a local crafter.

Lots of Swarovski on my new Tree

I am looking for enterprising crafters who want to expand their business from spare time to part-time/full time. I’m going full time with my handmade jewellery business and starting selling from a street stall in Edinburgh city centre. In order to maximise the length of time I can be on the street I need to have a second person at the stall to allow for trips to the car for setup and bathroom breaks etc. You must be willing to exchange time working on the stall for the opportunity to sell your products. This is an ideal first step towards going full time or moving on to your own shop.

I’m planning to sell Tuesday to Saturday, plus public holidays throughout the year in any weather that is viable (anything but windy days really) from a high traffic pitch in the heritage area of Edinburgh. The passing trade is likely to be tourist heavy during the summer, with a stronger proportion of local residents outside of the festival season. I am also planning to have a pitch in/near one of the central parks for particularly nice days. There will be some days (particularly weekends) where I will be unavailable as I have some fairs booked for this year already.

I will be covering the expense of buying the covered stall and registering the licences and I have a car that I can use to transport you and the stall to our pitch. In exchange for doing a days work on the stall I will give you 25% of the selling space on the stall to sell your own goods and you will keep all of the profits from those sales. You will be an independent trader, not an employee, but will be listed as an “Assistant” on the licence to allow you to be on the stall.

Ideally I am looking for one crafter who is willing to commit to 5 days a week, but I understand that this sort of commitment on short notice is difficult. As an alternative, I would also consider crafters who are willing to cover 1-2 days per week on a regular basis and a pool of occasional assistants who can help out when regulars are unavailable.

I’m required to state the products that I will be selling at time of registration of the licence, so if you make something other than jewellery and are not on board from the start, you will not be able to join me at a later date. I cannot accept and food based crafters as that requires a different licence and I may decline if I feel that your brand conflicts with mine or competes directly with me (glass heart jewellery mostly).

I need to move quite quickly on this as it can take up to 6 weeks for the licence application to be processed and I need to submit the names of assistants at time of application. If I hold off too long we’ll miss the lucrative festival period.

If you are interested, please contact me with your name, craft and the days you would be interested in and we can arrange to meet up and discuss things further.

20" Sterling Silver Chain

For a long time I have been listing the prices of my hangings and chains seperately from the pendants. This is because I prefer the look of the more expensive sterling silver chains and they add a reasonable amount onto the cost of your jewellery.

From now on, all pendants include a silver plated 18” chain for free with the order. You still have the option to upgrade to Sterling Silver or a satin cord if you are looking for something a little special, but now you can wear my pendants straight out the box.
